For children, city hospital launches round-the-clock trauma care centre

18-Oct-2012

The Apollo Children’s Centre for Trauma was formally launched on Wednesday.

The centre will provide round-the-clock care for children with severe and life-threatening injuries. The centre has facilities such as in-house blood storage and CT scan facilities, 24-hour radiology and laboratory services besides dedicated paediatric ambulances.

'Accidents on the rise'

Indira Jayakumar, senior consultant, paediatric trauma and emergency at the centre, said the first 30 minutes after an accident is referred to as ‘platinum 30 minutes’.

Some accidents such as those involving injuries due to televisions falling from stands, burns or accidents involving vehicles have become more common now and require attention as soon as the accident occurs, she added. The centre was inaugurated by Apollo Hospitals group chairman Pratap C. Reddy who lauded the effort. Additional director general of police (Law and Order) T.K. Rajendran urged children to encourage their parents to obey traffic rules and adhere to safety measures such as fastening of seat belts and wearing of helmets.

Raghavi, who is being treated at the centre, shared her experiences with school children who were present at the function.

Mr. Rajendran gave away prizes to winners of the slogan, drawing and painting competitions held as part of a child-injury prevention campaign. Singer Mano also participated in the event.
